City of Westerville issued the following announcement on Oct. 16.
People are spending more time at home and, as a result, are placing more items out for curbside recycling and refuse collection. Rumpke is asking for help to ensure this program continues to run smoothly and safely.
According to Rumpke, the increase in household output can result in service delays and worker fatigue. They recently issued a notice asking residents to consider taking the following steps:
WE NEED YOUR HELP
• Consider donating used furniture, toys and clothing.
• If you are able to dispose of your bulk items throughout several collection days, we encourage you to do so.
• Make sure your trash is visible at the curb.
• Drivers cannot collect hazardous material such as batteries, pool chemicals, propane and helium tanks, tires, paint and other unknown liquids. If you set out hazardous items at the curb, they will not be collected. Visit SWACO.org to find a location for proper disposal of hazardous material.
• Properly prepare your bulky material. Wrap upholstered items in plastic, make sure carpet is cut into rolls no bigger than 4 feet and bag or bundle your yard waste.
• Break down and recycle cardboard boxes.
GENERAL SERVICE GUIDELINES
• Place trash in bags or containers, not exceeding 50 pounds each, or rent a Rumpke trash cart.
• Place recycling in the recycling container. Do not bag recyclables.
• Place trash, recycling and yard waste curbside the evening before or by 7 a.m. on your service day.
BULKY ITEMS & APPLIANCES
Rumpke will collect bulk household items from the curb on your trash service day. Examples of bulk items include appliances, carpet, furniture and large toys. Please wrap mattresses and upholstered items in plastic. Contact Rumpke for information about items with Freon.
YARD WASTE GUIDELINES
Please don’t include trunks, stumps, logs, plastic bags, pots, food waste, rocks, dirt or pumpkins. Each bag, bundle, container or item should not exceed 50 pounds. Cut branches to 4 ft. or shorter and tie into bundles (no wider than 2 ft.) with string or twine. Place loose material in biodegradable bags or rigid containers marked “Yard Waste.” Do not line with plastic bags. For residents with curbside trash service, any container holding yard waste must be clearly marked “Yard Waste” to ensure it is collected by the proper truck.
REMINDER: The City’s leaf collection program is managed by the Westerville Public Service Department. Find guidelines and best practices at www.westerville.org/leafcollection.
