Black History Month Community Celebration - February 24

Blackhistory 781x500 1200x769

New Albany-Plain Local Schools recently issued the following announcement.

The 2022 New Albany-Plain Local Schools’ annual Black History Month production, “This Is Us,” will feature approximately eighty students from the middle and high schools. The action unfolds in a hospital, where first-year resident doctors are going through their rounds, talking with their patients, and educating each other about the history of healthcare disparities facing African-Americans.

The program also celebrates the accomplishments and advancements made by Black Americans in the medical and health professions. Contributions made by Dr. Charles Drew, Dr. Marilyn Hughes Gaston, and Dr. Patricia Bath are among those that are highlighted.  Another segment examines mental wellness in the African-American community.  Jazz music is this year's featured genre, and the production includes a tribute to legends Duke Ellington and Ella Fitzgerald.

"This Is Us" is in alignment with the district’s R-Factor (E+R=O) system which attaches the importance of being focused and thoughtfully engaged, as well as acting with purpose and pride in order to have positive outcomes, and supporting each other by celebrating the timeless values of equality and acceptance while building an inclusive campus culture.  Further, this year's theme and original script corresponds with the ASALH (Association for the Study of African American Life and History) 2022 theme of Black Health and Wellness and its mission "to promote, research, preserve, interpret and disseminate information about Black life, history, and culture to the global community".

We invite the community to a special preview performance Thursday, February 24 at 7:00 PM in the McCoy Center for the Arts.  Admission is FREE.  The program will again be presented at grade-level assemblies on Friday, February 25 for students in grades 4-12.
