City of Gahanna issued the following announcement on Feb 26.
On February 17, both Sgt. Mike Gray and Officer Kelie Moffitt were presented a Field Services Sub-division Core Value Award for the following incident detailed below. Officer Eric Allen was also included in this award but unfortunately unavailable on this presentation day.
On February 7, 2022, Sgt. Mike Gray, and Officers Eric Allen and Kelie Moffitt responded to a suicide attempt at an area residence.
Sgt. Gray and Officer Allen arrived on scene and were directed to a bathroom where the individual was found in a bathtub by family members. The individual had sustained serious lacerations and was cold to the touch.
Sgt. Gray quickly assessed the nature of the injuries and without delay applied a tourniquet. Officer Allen arrived and assisted Sgt. Gray so that an additional tourniquet could be applied. Both Officers then moved the individual so that additional life-saving efforts could be taken. Officer Moffitt arrived on the scene and immediately began to administer CPR.
As she did so, the tourniquets were found to have successfully mitigated the subject’s bleeding. Shortly thereafter the individual was revived. Officers continued to administer care as they awaited the arrival of EMS personnel, demonstrating great sympathy and empathy for the individual and family members present. The sense of urgency, on-scene supervision, coordination, and application of first aid by officers combined to save the individual’s life.
In doing so, Sgt. Gray and Officers Allen and Moffitt answered the highest calling of a law enforcement officer, furthered the mission of the Division, and exemplified the Division’s Core Values.
In addition to the Sub-division Core Value Award the Award’s Committee has received a recommendation for lifesaving citations for these officers’ actions.
