Columbus Mayor Andrew J. Ginther and Council President Shannon G. Hardin have revealed plans for nearly $21 million in summer programming for Columbus youth. The announcement, made on April 15, 2024, outlines a significant investment in the city's young population to support their growth and development during the upcoming summer months.

Mayor Ginther emphasized the importance of the initiative, stating, "Our children have been through so much these last few years – coming out of the pandemic and adjusting to a changed society – and it is vital that they see themselves in our city’s future." The funding aims to provide structure, stability, and new skill development opportunities for teens and children across Columbus, paving the way for a brighter future that is both dynamic and inclusive.

Council President Hardin echoed the sentiment, highlighting the role of summer programs in fostering a safer community and a stronger workforce. He emphasized, "The programs we’re funding this year provide opportunities for kids in every neighborhood to learn, grow and build community, whether through athletics, STEM exposure, job training, enrichment camps and so much more."

The $20.8 million in funding includes $8.6 million allocated to 90 community organizations following an open, competitive application process. These programs focus on promoting academic achievement, career readiness skills, and non-violent conflict resolution, empowering youth to develop and grow. The funding proposals underwent evaluation by an interdepartmental review committee, leading to the recommended allocations that will be considered by Columbus City Council at the April 29 meeting.

In addition to the community organization grants, the city has already approved $12.2 million for various city-sponsored summer programs. These initiatives encompass a range of activities such as police and fire cadet classes, the Columbus Recreation and Parks APPS Job Readiness Program, summer camps, youth sports, and partnerships with community organizations.

The comprehensive approach to summer programming aims to provide Columbus youth with diverse opportunities for learning, skill development, and community engagement. The investments made by the city reflect a commitment to supporting the next generation and ensuring their well-being and growth.
