Columbus officials have announced the "Clean and Safe Corridor" initiative aimed at enhancing safety and promoting economic growth along main business areas. The initiative, led by Mayor Andrew J. Ginther and City Council President Shannon G. Hardin, began its operations on March 24 and is due to conclude on April 4 on Parsons Avenue, covering the area between E. Livingston Avenue and Hosack Street.
Mayor Ginther described the initiative as "a proactive, collaborative approach to addressing our community’s needs," emphasizing the collaboration between city resources and local businesses for neighborhood safety and success. The effort involves extensive city services, including street maintenance, waste removal, safety reforms, business inspections, and code compliance, all valued at over $164,500. Additionally, a $165,000 grant was given to the South Side Thrive Collaborative to support ongoing neighborhood safety and cleanliness.
Columbus City Council President Shannon Hardin highlighted the significance of Parsons Avenue and praised last year's resident-led partnership with the South Side Thrive Collaborative. “Parsons Avenue is a canary in the coal mine for our City’s growing pains," Hardin noted, underscoring the corridor's challenges and opportunities, such as the presence of diverse small businesses and the need for affordable housing.
Scheduled repairs and interventions during the initiative included safety enhancements, beautification efforts, and property inspections. This year, the initiative will expand to three additional commercial corridors, which will be revealed during the April 16 State of the City Address. This approach aims at providing targeted improvements for the unique issues faced by each area.
