Columbus city leaders have announced over $28 million in funding dedicated to youth programming, with a focus on summer initiatives. Mayor Andrew J. Ginther and Council President Shannon G. Hardin revealed the financial plan, which includes $8.6 million designated for summer program grants.

"We owe it to our kids to give them every chance to succeed," said Mayor Ginther. He emphasized the importance of providing structure and opportunities to develop new skills, aiming for a future where growth is dynamic and inclusive.

From the total amount, $8.6 million is distributed among 112 community organizations. These groups went through a competitive application process held from January 13 to February 14, and their proposals were evaluated by an interdepartmental committee.

The supported programs aim to boost youth academic performance, health, and career readiness. The city's focus is on empowering vulnerable, at-risk, and underserved youth, especially those affected by socioeconomic challenges.

Ordinances for the $8.6 million allocation will be reviewed by the Columbus City Council at the April 21 meeting. Council President Hardin reflected on his own summer work experiences and emphasized the necessity of providing today's youth with similar enriching opportunities.

Columbus also approved an additional $19.6 million for city-sponsored summer efforts, including cadet classes, job readiness programs, and youth sports. This marks the city's commitment amid federal funding reductions for nonprofits.

A comprehensive list of the funded organizations is available to the public.
